Recipe scaler

Enter a recipe’s original yield and the number of portions you want to prepare. Every ingredient amount updates with the same scaling factor, making batch cooking and small-household adjustments faster.

Seasoning, leavening, thickening, cooking time, and pan size may not scale perfectly. Treat the result as a starting point and adjust carefully.

The basic formula

Desired yield ÷ original yield.

A recipe for four scaled to ten servings uses a 2.5× multiplier. The calculator applies that factor to every ingredient amount.

Taste as you scale

Seasonings are not always linear.

Salt, hot spices, leavening, thickeners, and cooking liquids may need smaller adjustments. Scale the starting amount, then taste and correct carefully.

Equipment matters

A bigger batch may cook differently.

Crowded pans brown less efficiently and deep containers can heat more slowly. Divide large batches when your equipment cannot maintain the original cooking conditions.

Method & interpretation

Scale a recipe while keeping yield, seasoning, and equipment in view

The mathematical part of recipe scaling is straightforward: desired servings divided by original servings creates a multiplier, and every ingredient is multiplied by that number. The practical part requires judgment because pan surface area, evaporation, heat recovery, and seasoning perception do not always scale at the same rate.

Use the calculated quantities as your preparation list, especially for grains, proteins, vegetables, and measured liquids. For salt, chile, thickener, leavening, and strong spices, begin conservatively and adjust during cooking when the recipe allows.

Quick start

How to use this calculator

  1. 01Enter the recipe’s original serving yield and your desired number of servings.
  2. 02Add each ingredient amount and preserve the unit used by the original recipe.
  3. 03Review the scaling factor and updated quantities before shopping or cooking.
  4. 04Check whether the larger or smaller batch needs a different pan, divided batches, or adjusted cooking time.
Common questions

Recipe scaler FAQ

Does cooking time scale with the number of servings?

Usually not in a simple linear way. Pan depth, surface area, appliance load, and ingredient temperature affect timing, so use doneness and food-safety cues.

Can I mix cups and grams?

Yes, because the calculator preserves each row’s unit. It does not convert between volume and weight; it scales the entered number.

Should I double every spice in a doubled recipe?

The calculator will show the doubled amount, but strong seasoning may need a cautious approach. Start below the maximum and taste when safe to do so.
