Meal cost calculator
Use this free meal cost calculator with the package prices in front of you. It estimates the ingredient cost of the complete recipe, then divides that total by your chosen number of servings. Change any price, quantity, or portion count to keep your personal meal-prep budget current.
Use like an app
iPhone/iPad: tap Share, then “Add to Home Screen.” Android/Chrome: open the browser menu, then choose “Add to Home screen” or “Install app.” This creates a convenient shortcut; an internet connection is still required.
Use the same unit for “package size” and “amount used” on each row. Tax, delivery fees, utilities, labor, and food waste are not included.
Your receipt is the best price source.
Grocery costs vary by store, neighborhood, package size, sale, and date. Entering the price you actually paid keeps the estimate useful without pretending that one New York average fits everyone.
Every ingredient is prorated.
The calculator divides package price by package size, multiplies that rate by the amount used, and adds the ingredient costs. The recipe total is then divided by your planned servings.
This is a food-cost estimate.
Tax, delivery fees, utilities, equipment, labor, transportation, and avoidable food waste are not included unless you build those costs into an ingredient price.
How to estimate meal-prep cost without relying on stale grocery averages
A useful meal cost calculator should answer a personal question: what will this batch cost with the groceries available to you now? This tool therefore uses your package price and quantity rather than a fixed database. That approach works for a supermarket receipt, warehouse package, halal butcher purchase, farmers-market item, or a sale price.
Use the same measurement unit for package size and amount used on each row. If a two-pound package costs $10 and the recipe uses one pound, that ingredient contributes $5. Using more than one package is fine: an amount used of three pounds against a two-pound package correctly represents one and a half packages.
How to use this calculator
- 01Set the number of finished servings you realistically expect from the recipe.
- 02Enter each ingredient’s current package price and the total quantity in that package.
- 03Enter how much of that same package the recipe uses, keeping both quantities in the same unit.
- 04Review recipe total and cost per serving, then change ingredients or servings to compare scenarios.
Meal cost FAQ
Does the calculator use current New York grocery prices?
It uses the prices you enter, so the estimate can reflect today’s receipt from your own NYC store instead of an average that may already be outdated.
Can I calculate cost per meal-prep container?
Yes. Set servings equal to the number of filled containers. The cost-per-serving result then represents the estimated ingredient cost of each container.
Are delivery fees and cooking time included?
No. The standard result covers entered ingredient costs only. Add fees to an ingredient price if you want a rough all-in grocery total, and treat labor, utilities, and equipment separately.
