Glass is a strong default when food goes from refrigerator to microwave and the container spends little time in a shoulder bag. Lightweight plastic: best for commuting

Stainless steel: best for cold meals and durability

Choose capacity before buying a set
Capacity labels can be misleading because two 28-ounce containers may have very different shapes. Measure the shelf, lunch bag, and office refrigerator space that the container must fit.
As a practical starting point—not a portion prescription—small 8- to 16-ounce containers suit sauces, snacks, and sides; 24- to 30-ounce containers handle many everyday lunches; and 32 ounces or more gives leafy salads and bulky vegetables room. Food safety starts before the lid closes

Follow the container and appliance instructions; “microwave safe” describes intended use, not a promise that food will heat evenly without stirring or checking.
For the freezer, use packaging intended for frozen storage and limit air contact to protect quality. USDA explains that freezing at 0°F keeps food safe while quality gradually declines, and that poor packaging contributes to freezer burn [5]. Leave sensible expansion room for liquids and follow the container manufacturer’s filling guidance.
Three sensible starter systems
For a daily commuter, begin with two or three lightweight lunch containers, two small sauce cups, and an insulated bag that fits two cold sources. For mostly home use, start with three or four shallow glass containers in one main size, plus one deeper container for soup or stew. For freezer-first batch cooking, choose stackable, freezer-rated containers in portions you can thaw individually rather than one oversized box.
None of these systems requires a giant bundle. Add pieces only after the first week shows a genuine gap. Fewer compatible shapes are easier to store, easier to match with lids, and less likely to become kitchen clutter.
