Use total protein for the complete package: protein per serving × servings per container. This does not score overall nutrition, halal status, taste, or usable yield.

Use the whole package

Read two numbers from the label.

Multiply protein per serving by servings per container to find total package protein, then enter that number with the current package price.

Value is not nutrition

Price is only one factor.

The cheapest protein may not fit every recipe, dietary need, allergy, sodium target, or halal requirement. Use this as a budget comparison, not a complete food rating.

Compare like with like

Include usable product weight.

Bones, drained liquid, trimming, and cooking loss can change real value. When possible, compare foods in the form you actually cook or eat.

Method & interpretation

Compare protein value using the package, not the shelf-price alone

A cheaper package is not always the cheaper source of protein. This calculator divides the total grams of protein in a package by its current price, then estimates what 30 grams of protein would cost at that rate. It is useful for comparing groceries with very different package sizes.

The result is a budget lens, not a complete nutrition score. Sodium, fiber, fat, micronutrients, allergies, convenience, cooking loss, taste, and halal verification still matter. Compare foods you would genuinely use in the same meal-prep role.

Common questions

Protein per dollar FAQ

Why use 30 grams of protein?

It is only a convenient comparison amount, not a universal meal target. Grams per dollar remains the direct value measure.

How do I handle meat with bones or liquid-packed foods?

When practical, base the comparison on the edible or drained portion. Otherwise note that the displayed value may overstate usable protein per dollar.

Does the best-value result mean it is the healthiest choice?

No. It identifies the highest entered protein per dollar only. A balanced choice depends on the full nutrition profile and your needs.
